UN Women Cameroon and FEICOM partnering towards the attainment of SDG 5 in Cameroon

UN Women Cameroon and FEICOM (special council support fund for mutual assistance) have signed a three-year partnership agreement (2018 – 2020) in view of the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) particularly SDG 5 relative to gender equality and women empowerment at local levels in Cameroon.

The cooperation agreement which was signed in Yaoundé on Wednesday July 18, 2018, cover three key areas: technical support to FEICOM towards the strengthening of gender mainstreaming in its policies and interventions; capacity-building of FEICOM personnel and Councils on issues of promotion of gender equality; and sharing data and experiences as well as the dissemination of best practices.

Mr. Adama Moussa, Resident Representative of UN Women Cameroon lauded this cooperation agreement which is in line with UN Women’s strategic objectives and United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF 2018 – 2020) and will support the implementation of the National Gender Policy. “I pledge to make available the technical expertise and experience of UN Women towards the attainment of the SDG’s particularly SDG 5 and I will guarantee the necessary leadership needed for the successful realization of the activities and objectives of this agreement” Adama said.

Speaking during the event, Mr. Carmille Akoa, Director of FEICOM reiterated the commitment of FEICOM towards the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in view of eradicating poverty, gender inequalities and injustices. “We particularly take to heart the attainment of goal 5 relative to gender equality and women empowerment. This is evident in the creation of a gender committee to ensure capacity building and gender mainstreaming in all our organizations policies, projects and interventions,” Mr Camille Akoa noted.

UN Women has been collaborating with FEICOM for several years by providing training on gender mainstreaming in budget processes to FEICOM staff, with the use of the FEICOM gender dashboard. In addition, the Director General of FEICOM is a HeForShe Ambassador - UN Women global flagship campaign for the elimination of violence against women. FEICOM equally associated the Resident Representative of UN Women as president of Jury of the 2nd contest of the FEICOM national price for best municipal practices of local development.

FEICOM is a Special Fund for created 1974 to support local development by providing technical and financial assistance to local councils and their communities. Its mission is to seek partnerships to support local municipalities in Cameroon mobilize adequate resources for their development. FEICOM also provides advisory services to councils and training to strengthen the management capacities local elected officials and local councilors.
