Press release: Statement of the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) on the appointment of AWLN Member, H.E. Sahle-Work Zewde of Ethiopia as President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia

The Members of the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) received with immense joy and great honor the election of H.E. Ms. Sahle-Work Zewde, AWLN pioneer Member, as President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia on Thursday 25th October 2018.

H.E. President Sahle-Work Zewde, former Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General to the African Union, and Head of the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU) and a seasoned Ethiopian diplomat with extensive international leadership, was elected as the first woman President of Ethiopia, together with a new cabinet with 50% women ministers, heads of departments.

The African Women Leaders Network wishes to take this opportunity to warmly congratulate President Sahle-Work Zewde, the government and People of Ethiopia for this milestone and to salute her commitment to creating lasting peace, development, gender equality and women’s empowerment in Ethiopia, Africa and the world.
