African Women Leaders Network (AWLN)

The African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) is a ground-breaking movement of African women leaders. It is implemented with the support of the Office of the AU Special Envoy on Women, Peace, and Security, and of the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). The initiative aims to enhance the leadership of women in the transformation of Africa, in line with Africa Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Aspiration 6 of Africa Agenda 2063, “The Africa We Want”, envisions an Africa that is people-centered, with gender equality, and where women are empowered and play their rightful role in all spheres of life. This aspiration is also reflected in Goal 5. The AWLN initiative is primarily a movement of women, facilitated by the African Union Commission and the United Nations, under the leadership of HE Moussa Faki Mahamat, AUC Chairperson, and HE Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General. It is supported through the Office of the Special Envoy of the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson for Women, Peace and Security, Ms. Bineta Diop, and former UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women, Dr. Phumzile Mlambo- Ngcuka. UN Women Liaison Office convenes AWLN’s regional consultation forums and provides coordination support to Regional and Country offices in the establishment of local level AWLN Chapters.
