These briefs synthesize evidence from the Socio-Cultural Analysis of Femicide in Kenya to highlight the complex, interlinked drivers, patterns, and impacts of femicide across the country. They identify multiple typologies, including intimate partner femicide, killings linked to property and inheritance disputes, witchcraft accusations and “cleansing” practices, sexual violence and incest, and violence during separation or attempted exit from relationships. These forms are shaped by deeply rooted gender inequalities, harmful socio-cultural norms, and economic vulnerabilities. They underscore how coercive control manifested through psychological abuse, surveillance, and economic dependence often precedes fatal outcomes.

Structural drivers such as poverty, transactional relationships, and women’s limited access to land and resources further heighten risk. In urban contexts, insecurity, anonymity, and shifting social dynamics contribute to emerging patterns of femicide. Institutional and justice chain failures, including weak reporting systems, poor case classification, limited coordination, and high barriers to accessing justice, perpetuate impunity. Media and digital narratives often reinforce victim-blaming, normalize violence, or obscure accountability, shaping public perceptions and responses.

The impacts of femicide are profound and far-reaching, affecting families, children, and communities through trauma, economic loss, stigma, and social fragmentation. The briefs call for typology-aware, county-level prevention models that address context-specific risks, strengthen institutional accountability, and promote coordinated, survivor-centred responses. Ultimately, they emphasize that preventing femicide requires integrated action across legal, social, economic, and cultural spheres to disrupt the continuum of violence against women and girls.
