Holistic Protection in Practice: Supporting Women and Girls in Amhara and Contested Areas
UN Women Ethiopia Country Office implemented a project, “Provision of emergency protection services including prevention and response of Conflict Related Sexual Violence (CRSV)/Gender-Based Violence (GBV) among IDP and host community women and girls in Amhara region and contested areas”, under the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF)’s Underfunded Emergencies, with an overarching goal of strengthening the provision of emergency lifesaving protection services including prevention and response of CRSV/GBV among IDP/returnees and host community women and girls in North Wollo (Raya Kobo), Wag Hamra (Sekota town), South Gondar (Sedie, Muja, and Simada), and contested areas including Alamata town, Mai Tsebri town, Raya Alamata and Zata. UN Women strengthened and established women empowerment approach called: Women’s Empowerment centers (WECs) in humanitarian response. This approach which UN Women has implemented in other countries’ humanitarian response including through CERF-UFE is a holistic and effective approach in responding to the protection needs of women and adolescent girls experiencing serious hardship and high protection risk in targeted zones in the Amhara region and contested areas.
