Gender Equality Profile Zanzibar, Tanzania

The Gender Equality Profile Zanzibar, Tanzania provides an updated, evidence-based overview of the state of gender equality and women’s empowerment in Zanzibar. Developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Elders and Children, the African Development Bank and UN Women, the Profile brings together official statistics and analysis across key sectors to identify progress, persistent gender gaps and priority areas for action.

The Profile examines gender equality across areas including education, employment and the economy, agriculture, health, leadership and political participation, climate change, infrastructure, violence against women and girls, and peace and security. Drawing on data from national surveys, administrative sources and stakeholder consultations, it highlights inequalities that continue to affect women’s access to economic opportunities, productive assets, decision-making and essential services. Among the findings, women have lower participation in paid employment and management positions and considerably lower access to secure agricultural land rights than men.

The Profile is intended to strengthen the evidence base for gender-responsive policies, programmes and investments in Zanzibar. It identifies priority actions for Government, the private sector, civil society and development partners, including strengthening gender-responsive policies and institutions, expanding women’s economic and leadership opportunities, improving access to education and health services, and strengthening the collection and use of gender-disaggregated data. The findings and recommendations provide an important resource for accelerating progress towards gender equality and ensuring that women and girls can participate in and benefit equally from Zanzibar’s development.
