Women’s Economic Empowerment

Women constitute over 60 per cent of the 70 per cent of Kenyans living in rural areas, where poverty levels remain high. The prevalence of 2024 projected absolute poverty in rural Kenya remains at 37 per cent. Statistics show that approximately 34 per cent of households are headed by women who are sole family providers, compared to 66 per cent headed by men, reflecting the traditional gender roles that are still prevalent in many rural communities. Rural women are at a bigger disadvantage compared to their urban counterparts in terms of access to political, economic and social development opportunities.
