Women’s Leadership and Political Participation

Public and political life in Kenya is characterized by low participation of women in politics and decision-making. Despite some notable improvements since the adoption of the new Constitution in 2010, women’s representation in political and other public leadership roles is still below the Constitutional threshold of the ‘not more than two-thirds’ gender representation in elective and appointive positions and the 50% target of the Sustainable Development Goals. The Global Gender Gap Report 2024¹ highlights that Kenya has made progress in reducing the gender gap, advancing from 77th to 75th globally with a score of 0.712.
