In 2021, despite the challenges and restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the UN Women Nigeria Country Office continued to implement programmatic, coordination and normative interventions as a contribution to efforts by the Government of Nigeria to close the gender inequality gap and advance the rights of women and girls.

Unfortunately, it is far from the truth. It seems that C19 is here to stay and even with the roll-out of vaccines in many parts of the world, the number of cases is skyrocketing worldwide.

Women’s leadership and increased participation in decision-making will be a cornerstone to sustain democratic values and enhance crisis management. Bold and ambitious change is needed. The pandemic must not in any way hinder the bold action needed for addressing gender equality and action is needed right now. The pandemic should not be a deterrent for equality and for all types of women’s participation.

It is with great pleasure that we reach out to you following a highly successful launch of the HeForShe campaign in Ethiopia and subsequent months of strong commitment pledged to the Campaign. The December launch at Capital Hotel was a beautiful event where men and women came together to boldly declare that gender equality is not just a women’s issue, it is a human rights issue. The Cameroon Minister of Women’s empower-ment and the family Marié Theres Abena On-doua has called on the family, educational, religious and private institutions in Cameroon to double efforts in the crusade to end violence against women and girls. She also called on men and boys to join the bandwagon to fight against gender based violence.The Minister was speaking November 25, 2015 during the official ceremony to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and girls and the launch of the 16 Days of activism against Gender based violence campaign.
