This report presents the findings and recommendations of the UN Women commissioned study on Opportunities for Women Entrepreneurs in the Context of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). This study aimed to identify opportunities for women entrepreneurs with regard to the AfCFTA, focusing on three areas of interest: women in informal cross-border trade (WICBT), gender and value chain analysis, and affirmative action/preferential public procurement.

This study revealed various perceptions of social norms around VAWG in Malawi. Particularly, it shows how pervasive social norms support gender inequality and VAWG, including harmful practices. The study focused on five districts – Dedza, Karonga, Mangochi, Mzimba and Salima – in Malawi. This study can be used to inform policy dialogue and programme development, including where and how UN Women and its partners can implement behaviour change projects aimed at promoting favourable social norms and attitudes at community levels, and to formulate key messages for communication initiatives on women’s rights, gender equality and VAWG.

The Abridged version of the Perceptions Study on Social Norms in Malawi serves as an executive summary of the baseline study for the EVAW thematic component of the Women’s Empowerment Programme (WEP) 2018-2021. Cost of gender gap in Tanzania

For Tanzania, the gender gap was substantial: an elimination of the gender gap in agricultural productivity in Tanzania would increase agricultural production by 30 per cent. Closing the gap could raise the country’s gross domestic product by $105 million (T Sh 210 billion) and lift 80,000 people out of poverty each year over a 10-year period. This study differs from its predecessor in that it takes a qualitative rather than quantitative approach to the subject. In its attempt to find underlying causes of the gender gap, the study conducted extensive interviews with 547 women and men in 19 farming villages in rural Tanzania. That is, it moves beyond merely establishing that a gender gap exists in Tanzanian agriculture to explain why it exists and what steps can be taken to reduce and eliminate this gap.

The study assessed the state of child marriage in Africa from practice to policy and interventions towards its eradication with a focus on ten countries with a comparatively higher prevalence of child marriage in the continent and globally. A critical emphasis of the study was on the nexus between the existence and implementation of the policies/legislation, and the dominant cultural and religious practices that affect the outcomes of the interventions in those countries, especially in identified hotspot areas within the countries. By focusing on the socio-cultural conditions, policy environment and eradication initiatives, the study provides critical information and perspectives, effective and appropriate programs/investment and policies in Africa to delay the age of marriage and end child marriage as a practice.
