The UN Women Regional Office for West and Central Africa (WCARO) in partnership with the Musée des civilisations noires in Dakar, Senegal, inaugurated in March 2020 a two-year exhibition that showcases women political leaders in Africa and highlights women's political participation across the continent. The exhibition will remain open until March 2022 and it is part of the Regional Women’s Leadership programme funded by the Government of Canada.

Dr. Christine Sadia is a gender and public health expert with over 30 years’ experience advising governments on health and gender issues, such as psychosocial needs of women in the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide and HIV programming during the Indonesia tsunami. UN Women is supporting Dr. Sadia in her current role as a Gender and Public Health Advisor for Kenya’s State Department for Gender Affairs, to advise on the country’s national emergency response for COVID-19.

Getrude Mligo, 23, was born two years after the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. As a high school student in Songea region of Tanzania, the gender inequalities she saw in her community, especially child marriages that forced girls out of school, prompted her to look back to the 1995 blueprint and begin asking questions. In 2020, Mligo participated in a UN Women mentorship programme as part of UN Women’s Generation Equality campaign, in partnership with Plan International, which paired her with UN Women Representative in Tanzania, Hodan Addou. In this interview, Mligo shares what it means to be a champion for Generation Equality.

UN Women has facilitated the establishment of 300 birth certificates for 193 girls and 107 boys aged 0 – 16 in the Ntui and Yoko council areas. On the 23thof August 2019, these birth certificates were handed over to the mayors of both municipal councils by the Divisional Officer of Mbam-et-Kim and the representative of the Development Bank of the Central African States (BDEAC) in the presence of the National Civil Status Registration Office (BUNEC), the President of the Court and nearly 100 actors during an official ceremony organized by UN Women at ‘Hotel de Chute’ in Ntui.

Nearly 60 women, candidates and Political Party leaders took part in the training workshop organized by the Ministry of Family and Women Empowerment in partnership with UNWOMEN in Yaoundé, 23-24 July 2019 on electoral processes, electoral law, transformative leadership, peer learning for women candidates, speaking out and engagement. The main objective was to improve women's political leadership with a view to their optimal participation in the upcoming elections (municipal and legislative).
