The UN in Tanzania marked International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026 through a series of nationwide engagements bringing together government, the private sector, students and communities to advance the global theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls.”

Observed annually on 8 March, International Women’s Day serves as a moment to reflect on progress, highlight persistent challenges, and renew collective commitment to gender equality.

National Commemoration in Geita Reinforces Commitment to Women’s Rights

At the national level, the UN joined the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and partners in the official commemoration held in Geita Region. The event convened national and local leaders, development partners, civil society, women’s groups, youth and community members, reaffirming the central role of women’s rights in achieving inclusive development.

Speaking at the event, the Minister for Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups underscored the Government’s commitment:

“Promoting the rights of women and girls is central to Tanzania’s development agenda. We remain committed to strengthening policies and actions that ensure women and girls can fully participate in and benefit from development,” she said.

The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Tanzania, Susan Ngongi Namondo, emphasized the importance of sustained investment:

“Advancing women’s rights is not only a matter of justice, it is essential for sustainable development. When women and girls are empowered, communities are stronger, economies grow, and societies thrive,” he noted.

Tanzania Rings the Bell for Gender Equality

Once again this year, the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE), Global Compact Network Tanzania (GCNT), UN Women and the World Bank Group joined forces on 9th March to "Ring the Bell for Gender Equality".

The event further marked the pre‑launch of the UN Women Tanzania Gender Snapshot, during which UN Women Representative a.i., Katherine Gifford, highlighted both progress made and the urgency of sustained commitment:

“Increasing women’s participation in leadership and financial decision‑making spaces is crucial for sustainable national development. Tanzania has made encouraging progress in addressing gender inequalities, particularly through policy and legislative reforms, but persistent gaps remain that require continued attention,” she said.

Scheduled for official launch later this year, the Tanzania Gender Snapshot presents a comprehensive assessment of progress on gender equality across all 17 Sustainable Development Goals and provides critical evidence to guide policy decisions and accelerate gender equality outcomes.

Empowering Girls Through School Outreach and Digital Literacy

UN Women marked the day through school outreach activities under the theme, “My Rights, My Power, My Digital Future.” Held at Gerezani Secondary School and Kisutu Girls Secondary School, the sessions created space for dialogue with students on women’s rights, access to justice, digital literacy and online safety.

A student participant reflected:

“The session helped me understand my rights and how I can use technology to build my future, which gives me further confidence to pursue my goals,” she said.

Through an ongoing AGCCI campaign, an additional session will be organized for the International Girls in ICT Day in April, 2026, in collaboration with the Embassy of Belgium in Tanzania and Enabel.

As Tanzania continues its journey toward inclusive and sustainable development, the 2026 International Women’s Day commemorations served as a powerful reminder that advancing women’s rights requires collective, sustained action. Through partnerships with government, the private sector, communities and young people, UN Women remains committed to supporting efforts that protect rights, expand access to justice and unlock opportunities, ensuring that all women and girls can live with dignity, participate fully in society and shape a more equitable future.
