From 26 to 28 August 2025, more than 150 leaders and experts from 21 countries will gather in Zanzibar City, Tanzania, for the Seventh Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces Global Leaders’ Forum, co-hosted by Zanzibar City and UN Women. The Forum, to be officially opened by H.E. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar, will spotlight strategic and effective approaches to creating safe and empowering public spaces for women and girls. This year’s event is especially significant, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the landmark Beijing Platform for Action.

The biennial Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces Forum is the only global gathering dedicated exclusively to advancing women’s safety in cities and public spaces. The Zanzibar Forum will highlight bold new commitments from mayors and leaders worldwide to end violence against women and girls; elevate the voices of women and girls contributing to building safe communities that address their needs and concerns, and showcase cutting-edge urban safety solutions, from locally driven data on the nature and extent of violence against women and girls in shaping public policies in different sectors, to community policing, and gender-responsive urban and transportation planning that are reshaping cities across Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe, North America, and beyond.

Participants will include mayors and local and regional governments, alongside representatives of women’s rights organizations, grassroots women and girls, development partners, researchers, the private sector, and global women’s safety networks.
