When women and girls move forward, the whole society progresses

National authorities, international partners, women’s organizations and citizens gathered to celebrate the central role women play in the country’s development, peace and social cohesion.

The ceremony brought together high-level officials including members of Government, Parliament, the diplomatic corps and representatives of national institutions.

Government officials, parliamentarians, members of state institutions and representatives of the diplomatic corps gradually took their seats.

The most anticipated moment was the arrival of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Évariste Ndayishimiye, accompanied by the First Lady, officially marking the beginning of the ceremony.

A parade showcasing women’s contributions

The ceremony continued with a large parade, highlighting the active participation of women across different sectors of national life, including agriculture, entrepreneurship, public administration, civil society and community initiatives.

To the rhythm of traditional drums, the delegations showcased the diversity and strength of women’s leadership in Burundi.

In his welcoming remarks, the Governor of Gitega Province praised the strong mobilization around this symbolic day: “Burundian women are at the heart of our country’s development. Their daily commitment within families, communities and institutions deserves recognition and support.”

Speaking on behalf of the United Nations system in Burundi, the UN Resident Coordinator emphasized the global significance of the day: “The celebration of 8 March, far from being a simple commemoration, is a powerful driver of change for women. It provides a global platform to celebrate achievements while identifying the challenges that remain.”

The UN Resident Coordinator also stressed the importance of defending women’s rights every day: “Women’s rights are human rights, and they must be defended and celebrated every day, not only on 8 March.”

The President of the National Women’s Forum also highlighted the progress made by Burundian women while reminding participants of the challenges that remain: “Burundian women continue to demonstrate their ability to transform their communities. Together, we must continue to open more spaces for leadership and opportunities for all.”

Honoring committed women

One of the highlights of the ceremony was the awarding of honorary certificates to several women recognized for their outstanding contributions within their communities.

Her Excellency Angéline Ndayishimiye, First Lady of Burundi, was among the women selected by the Burundi Women's Forum and honored by His Excellency President Evariste Ndayishimiye during the celebration of International Women's Day, held in Gitega on March 9. 

Among the initiatives highlighted was in vitro fertilization (IVF), promoted by her foundation, "Bonne Action - Mugiraneza", which aims to give hope to women facing infertility.

These distinctions celebrated remarkable initiatives in education, entrepreneurship, social cohesion and peacebuilding.

A celebration filled with hope by the message from the Head of State

In his address, HE President Évariste Ndayishimiye reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening policies that promote gender equality. “Sustainable development in Burundi cannot be achieved without the full participation of women. We must continue to promote their rights, their leadership and their economic empowerment.”

The ceremony concluded with a closing prayer followed by the national anthem and the women’s anthem. Beyond the celebrations, this 2026 International Women’s Day served as a strong moment of recognition and mobilization, reminding everyone that Burundian women remain key actors in the social, economic and political progress of Burundi.
