UN Women Uganda and Equity Bank Uganda Partner to Advance Women’s Economic Empowerment and Financial Inclusion
Date:
UN Women Uganda and Equity Bank Uganda have signed a two-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance women’s economic empowerment and promote financial inclusion across Uganda, including among women in underserved and refugee-hosting communities.
Signed on 1 April 2026, the partnership seeks to expand women’s access to finance, strengthen skills development, promote digital literacy, and support the adoption of clean energy solutions that enhance women’s economic opportunities and resilience.
The collaboration reflects the shared commitment of both institutions to address barriers that limit women’s participation in economic activities and create an enabling environment where women can build sustainable livelihoods, grow businesses, and contribute to inclusive economic development.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, UN Women Uganda Deputy Country Representative, Ms. Adekemi Ndieli, emphasized the importance of private sector partnerships in advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment.
“This partnership reflects our commitment to ensuring women—especially those in underserved communities—have the tools and opportunities they need to thrive,” said Ms. Ndieli.
Catherine Psomgen, Director Public Sector & Social Investment at Equity Bank Uganda, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to supporting women’s economic autonomy through inclusive financial solutions.
“We’re proud to partner with UN Women Uganda to break barriers to women’s economic autonomy—through finance, training, digital literacy, and clean energy. Inclusive finance drives inclusive growth,” said Ms. Psomgen.
Through the MoU, UN Women Uganda and Equity Bank Uganda will collaborate on initiatives that strengthen women’s access to financial services, entrepreneurship support, capacity building, and innovative solutions that respond to the needs of women, including those in vulnerable communities.
The partnership contributes to national and global commitments on gender equality, including the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 5 on achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls.
By leveraging the strengths of the public and private sectors, UN Women Uganda and Equity Bank Uganda aim to accelerate progress towards an inclusive economy where women have equal opportunities to participate, prosper, and lead.
