UN Women, in collaboration with the European Union Delegation and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar (RGoZ), is implementing a five-year project titled "Ending Violence Against Women & Girls and Advancing Women’s Leadership in the Public Sector in Zanzibar & Tanzania Mainland" (2022–2026) in three regions: Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mainland Tanzania. In Zanzibar and Pemba, the districts of South Unguja in Unguja and Mkoani in Pemba have been selected for project interventions due to the high prevalence of violence against women and girls in these areas.

The program aims to create a more equitable environment and services for women to live free from violence, promote women’s economic empowerment, and enhance equality in participation, leadership, and decision-making, including in the justice sector. To achieve progress in gender equality and women’s empowerment, the project strengthens the capacity of the RGoZ to implement the National Action Plan to End Violence Against Women and Children (NPA-VAWC) and is supporting the development of the next generation NPA-VAWC. This is achieved through strategic actions across three key domains: enabling environment, prevention, and response, along with promoting women’s leadership and participation in public spheres.
