Event description

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, UN Women and UNFPA will host two high-level events on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 in Africa during the 2022 Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development (ARFSD).

Both events will provide a knowledge-sharing platform on the coherent implementation of SDG 5 and Aspiration 6 of the African Union’s 2063 Agenda at the local, national and regional levels in the context of COVID-19 and building back better.

In addition, participants - including government officials, diplomats, UN delegates, civil society representatives and youth activists - will share strategies to meaningfully engage more women and girls in climate change policies for a sustainable and resilient Africa, particularly in view of SDG 15 (life above land).

The first event will be held virtually on 1 March and will consider the progress, challenges, opportunities and key priority actions for accelerating the implementation of SDG 5 on gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The second parallel event will take place in Kigali, Rwanda, on 4 March during the ARFSD and will also be live-streamed for international participants. The parallel event is themed around ‘Building Forward Better: Women and Girls for a Green, Inclusive and Resilient Africa Poised to Achieve the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063’.

The interventions from the two events will inform the outcome of this year’s ARFSD, which will feed into the 2022 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.

Agenda

The second part of the event will be hybrid and will take place on 04 March 2022 | Time: 11:15 pm to 1:00 pm Kigali Time
