UN Women Kenya Annual Report 2023
In 2023, Kenya achieved significant progress in advancing gender equality. With strong leadership from the Government of Kenya, the country renewed its commitment to the Constitutional implementation of the two-thirds gender rule in Parliament. UN Women’s collaboration with the government, civil society, and local communities created an environment for transformative action.
Despite challenges, Kenyan women and girls showcased resilience, advocating for their rights, economic empowerment, and safety. Their inspiring stories drive our commitment to dismantling barriers to gender equality.
Key achievements include:
- Policy Advancements: A renewed commitment to the two-thirds gender rule and strengthened legal frameworks, highlighted by the Presidential memo to Parliament.
- Gender-Responsive Budgeting: With 81% of counties improving public finance management, the County Budget Transparency Report 2023 reflected progress toward equitable service delivery.
- UNSCR 1325 Implementation: Launching 53 new localized action plans brought the total to 184, reinforcing women’s roles in peace and security.
- Justice for SGBV Survivors: Resolved cases rose from 6,043 in 2021 to over 10,000 in 2023, demonstrating enhanced justice mechanisms.
- Unpaid Care Policy: Advocacy led to the development of the National Care Policy, recognizing the critical role of unpaid care work.
The overarching aim is to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls by the 2030 deadline for the Sustainable Development Goals. Gender equality and women's empowerment are vital for building strong institutions and fostering stable communities.
