South Sudan Country Gender Equality Profile
In 2022, the National Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare (MGCSW) and UN Women South Sudan conducted a study to develop the Country Gender Equality Profile (CGEP) for South Sudan. The study engaged government ministries, civil society, women’s groups, academia, and development partners to examine gender equality, women’s rights, and governance. It assessed various sectors, including education, health, agriculture, and compliance with gender-related policies and standards.
Using qualitative methods like interviews and focus group discussions with 102 respondents (78 women, 24 men), the study highlighted progress in gender equality policy implementation during South Sudan’s peace agreement transition. However, significant challenges persist, including illiteracy, limited access to information and health services, violence against women, and the impacts of conflict and climate change.
The report calls for increased funding and support for gender-responsive policies and programs to address these issues. It emphasizes the need for legal reforms, institutional strengthening, and socio-economic development to promote cultural shifts and create a safe environment for women and girls. Key recommendations focus on collaborative action by the government, UN agencies, and civic groups to achieve meaningful progress in gender equality.
