One third of Nigerian women have experienced violence in the family. Furthermore, forced sex and the inability to negotiate condom use due to fear of violence place women under a high risk of HIV infection and consequent stigmatization in their communities. CIRDDOC breaks new ground in halting violence and the spread of HIV by developing community mechanisms such as Anti-Violence Committees headed by men, including traditional leaders, to advocate for changed mindsets of men in gender equality issues. In addition, CIRDDOC empowers women survivors of violence and HIV-positive women to claim their rights, and builds the capacity of duty bearers to deliver justice to women.
