Empowering women to build resilience in humanitarian setting

Meiganga, 28 December 2017: Female refugees, IDPs and women in refugee host communities at the Ngam refugee site in the Adamaoua Region of Cameroon have again received a second set of equipment and materials aimed at building their resilience, ensuring their financial autonomy and reducing their vulnerability in and out of the Ngam refugee site.
The second consignment of materials made up of an all -weather Toyota pick- up, moto cycles, tricycles, grinding mills and sewing machines were donated to the management of the Women Cohesion Space, refugee women and those from the host communities by UN Women on 28 December 2017 at the WCS in Ngam. These second set of materials are in addition to the economic kits, donated to female refugees and women in refugee host communities during the inaugural ceremony of the WCS by the Minister of Women’s empowerment and the Family on 1 August, 2017.
While presiding over the solemn ceremony to present the second set of equipment, the Senior Divisional Officer of Mbere Division- Mvogo Syliac Marie described as “noble and strategic”, the initiative and policy of UN Women Cameroon to assist not only the refugee women but also women in refugee host communities.
“With all these support from UN Women, I am convinced that the level of vulnerability of women within and outside the refugee site in Ngam will reduce”, noted the Divisional Officer.
Humanitarian actors, the traditional ruler of Ngam, the Mayor of Maiganga, the Regional Delegate of the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and the Family and a host of other refugee women and those from host communities who attended the event all hailed UN Women for the end of year gesture.
“The first set of economic kits we received from UN Women in August this year has greatly improved our financial situation, we now rarely go to our husbands to ask for money to get basic needs in the house, we now provide them ourselves”, explained the representative of the beneficiaries at the site-Lema Marguerite.
According to the Program Specialist of UN Women Cameroon- Joseph Ngoro, the car will be put at the disposal of the Divisional Delegate of the Ministry in Meiganga for the follow up of the project at the site; the moto cycles and tricycles will assist the staff and the Management committee of the WCS for mobility and transportation of goods and services and even women with disability within the site and refugee host community, while the grinding mills and sewing machines will increase the economic empowerment of women within the humanitarian setting.
