PRESS RELEASE

UNHCR and UN Women sign partnership agreement in CAR – 08 July 2024

Bangui –Monday, July 8, Olivier Fafa Attidzah, Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in the Central African Republic and Salvator Nkurunziza, UN Women Country Representative signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the two agencies to support and strengthen the response to the specific needs and concerns of refugee women and girls, returnees, stateless people and host communities.

It should be recalled that since the resurgence of violence in Sudan between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in mid-April 2023, the Central African Republic (CAR) has been hosting thousands of Sudanese refugees and Central African returnees through several entry points, the majority passing through Am-dafock, in the Vakaga region of CAR. Similarly, inter-communal conflicts between nomadic Fulani herders and local farmers in Chad have led to population movements from Chad to border villages in the Central African Republic (CAR).

In total, the CAR hosts 70,007 refugees and asylum seekers and in addition, 450,673 people are internally displaced. According to the report of the coordination meeting of Humanitarian Actors held on April 24, 2024 in Birao, of the 11,196 people or 4,878 households on the Korsi site in the Vakaga, 75% are women and children, which represents an increase of 29% compared to the previous month. In addition, women and girls are at greater risk of sexual and gender-based violence and numerous protection incidents have been reported.

In response, and in search for durable solutions to the needs of people in situations of forced displacement, UN Women and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reaffirm their commitment to accelerate their joint work for all refugee, returnee, stateless women and girls and host communities at the national and regional levels.

The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) commit through the signed Memorandum of Understanding to support women and girls in situations of forced displacement, through the implementation of complementary programs and joint advocacy actions for the benefit of Central Africans.

To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, let us act to eradicate poverty, and ensure that all human beings live in peace and prosperity by 2030.
