UN Women Ethiopia in partnership with the Ethiopian Statistical Service (ESS) provided a three-day training on Gender-Responsive Migration Data and Statistics Governance targeting staff of ESS and members of the Migration Data Management and Statistics Technical Working Group from 21-23 December 2023 in Adama town of the Oromia Region.

The training with over fifteen participants from federal-level sector ministries and institutions aimed to enhance their capacities in generating gender data on migration to effectively impact policy, programming, services and decision-making. To ensure inclusive gender data system at institutional level along with enhanced experts’ analytical capacity, the sessions emphasized on gender equality concepts and frameworks, strategies to deal with unconscious bias and gender stereotypes, and on the importance of gender mainstreaming in migration data governance. Moreover, the training equipped participants with tactics to collect, analyze and use gender-responsive migration data in their regular work. The training’s participatory approaches including group discussions, concept matching, and case studies enabled participants to actively engage and gain adequate practical knowledge and skills to contribute in bridging the gender data gap for safe migration, particularly for women and girls.

According to Ms. Hiwot Gelana, a senior public prosecutor at the National Partnership Coalition for Migration, under the Ministry of Justice, the knowledge gained will improve not only her work as the focal person in handling human trafficking cases, but also of her co-workers, “At country level we are in charge of coordinating and submitting migration related data from different regions to the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office. We, however, never considered gender issues as detailed as what we gained from this training. I have a plan to extend the skill acquired to my colleagues. For instance, in relation to human trafficking we will deploy a task force to collect data. As the focal person on this, I will ensure that those assigned have the skill on gathering, analyzing, and reporting gender disaggregated data.”

For Mr. Abrar Kemal, Migration and Urbanization statistician at the Ethiopian Statistical Service (ESS), this was his first time to acquire skills on how to collect and use gender disaggregated data on migration. According to him, the planned country level integrated survey on different sectors is a good opportunity for him to practically apply the acquired skill, “The proposed study known as integrated survey, is composed of different sectors. The survey on labor and migration is one of them. I will ensure to practically apply what I learnt and contribute to make migration safe for women.’
