UN Women promotes training on gender-based violence and WPS agenda for military in Mozambique
Date:
From November 14 to 16, 2023, UN Women Mozambique conducted a training session in Maputo for gender focal points of the Mozambican Armed Forces on Gender, Gender-Based Violence and the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) Agenda.
The training took place as part of the project "Promoting the Agenda on Women, Peace and Security with Military Actors", and aims to ensure that military actors contribute effectively to mobilizing the transformative potential of the WPS Agenda.
In his opening speech, the National Director of Human Resources at the Ministry of National Defense, Colonel Jorge Leonel, considered that women undergoing this training will improve their knowledge on gender and skills to share with others, to strengthen their potential to exercise gender transformative leadership and participate in decision-making processes in their jobs.
For Ondina da Barca Vieira, UN Women Programme Specialist, the training aims to strengthen the capacity of gender focal points to lead efforts to integrate a gender perspective into military operations, training, organizational structures and supervision mechanisms of the Armed Defense Forces of Mozambique (FADM) and implementation of the agenda on Women, Peace and Security. With the training, the Program Specialist hope to see the potential of gender focal points awakened and strengthened to exercise gender transformative leadership and participate in decision-making processes in their workplaces.
On the same context, the second training session for gender focal points of the Mozambique Armed Defense Forces (FADM) took place in Cabo Delgado province from November 22 to 24.
The training covered gender issues, gender-based violence and the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda and was attended by around 30 focal points from different FADM specialties from the northern region of Mozambique.
The trainings are taking place as part of the implementation of the project "Promoting the Agenda on Women, Peace and Security with Military Actors", implemented by UN Women Mozambique in partnership with the Armed Defense Forces of Mozambique (FADM) and funded by the European Union.
