INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR RURAL WOMEN'S UNPAID CARE WORK IN SENEGAL

Women perform over 75% of the world's unpaid care work. This limits the time they can invest in income-generating activities, and thus their opportunities for economic empowerment.
Recognizing, reducing and redistributing unpaid care work, through a more equitable distribution of responsibilities within the household and communities, the provision of appropriate public services, and the establishment of social protection policies and mechanisms, is therefore essential to facilitate women's contribution to the national economy and achieve the 2030 Agenda.

This infographic presents the results of the work of UN Women and its partners in Senegal as part of the "Transformative Approaches to Recognizing, Reducing and Redistributing Unpaid Care Work in Women's Economic Empowerment" program (3R Program), which identified solutions to address the needs of rural women in relation to unpaid care work.

In particular, it illustrates that health-related unpaid care work has a significant impact on rural women in Senegal, and that they have little access to care work redistribution mechanisms that could compensate for the loss of income due to care work, such as financial and social protection services. Among the various recommendations for policy measures, it also illustrates the importance of access to healthcare for women and their families via an adapted and affordable health insurance model, which constitutes an effective mechanism for redistributing unpaid care work.
