The Low-Cost Household Biogas Project is an initiative by UN Women that addresses the nexus of climate change mitigation and gender equality in rural areas of Nigeria. By promoting biogas as an accessible and eco-friendly energy alternative, the project strengthens women's economic independence, enhances community health, and combats climate change. Women-led cooperatives are producing biogas for household cooking and generating income by selling surplus biogas and bio-slurry fertilizer. Beyond reducing unpaid care work, the project trains women and local artisans in renewable energy skills and contributes to agricultural productivity and food security. It also aligns with national and global climate and gender equality goals, including SDGs 5, 7, 8, and 13. With its focus on community engagement, private sector partnerships, and capacity-building, the project is fostering green jobs and building climate resilience among Nigeria’s rural women.
