Women's representation in political leadership in Kenya has been historically low, however the narrative is changing. Media Focus, supported by UN Women with financial support from Global Affairs Canada (GAC), launched the Filamu za Akina Dada Uongizini (Filamu Dada) Initiative to spotlight the journeys of seven remarkable women leaders from across Kenya.

Filamu Dada, a segment of the Ms. President Initiative, empowered seven pairs (a producer and director) of Kenyan female filmmakers to produce internationally compliant short documentaries. The aim of the initiative was to amplify the voices of women leaders, challenge stereotypes, and promote gender equality in leadership. These documentaries not only document the leaders' journeys but also demonstrate their impact, reshaping perceptions and inspiring future generations of women leaders.

Changing Perceptions, One Story at a Time

The initiative was born out of the recognition that women remain significantly underrepresented in political leadership in Kenya. By showcasing the resilience and achievements of female leaders, Filamu Dada sought to transform community perceptions and attitudes about women in leadership roles. Over a period of six months, the films captured the experiences of these leaders before and after the 2022 elections, highlighting their campaigns, victories, and plans for the future.

Profiles of Women Leaders

The seven women leaders featured in the documentaries from diverse backgrounds and regions of Kenya are:

  • Governor Hon. Cecily Mbarire – Embu County
  • Governor Hon. Gladys Wanga – Homabay County
  • Women County MP Hon. Donya Aburi Dorice - Kisii County
  • Women County MP Hon. Mumina Bonaya - Isiolo County
  • Women County MP Hon. Cynthia Muge Rotich - Nandi County
  • Hon. Sabina Chege – Murang’a County, Nominated MP
  • Senior Chief Caroline Ncharo - Kajiado County

Each film delved into their unique journeys, capturing the challenges they have overcome and the impact they have made in their communities.

Impact and Recognition: Spreading the Message

Since its official launch at the National Museums, the documentaries have garnered attention both locally and internationally. Screenings at prestigious events such as the Movies that Matter International Film Festival in The Hague, Netherlands, in March 2023 and the International Women’s Day celebrations in Embu, have increased the reach of these powerful stories. The films have sparked conversations about women's leadership and empowerment, engaging audiences from diverse backgrounds.

The films were officially launched on 5 October 2023 at the National Museums in a ceremony attended by various leaders, governors and MPs, as well as other dignitaries from the United Nations, development partners, the media and representatives of civil society.

With the exception of Senior Chief Caroline Ncharo, the films document the women leaders’ campaigns, getting elected and being sworn in.  Chief Caroline’s film documents her journey as the first female Chief among the Maasai, showcasing her impact in the community especially in supporting girls’ education and in changing perceptions about women in leadership.

UN Women's support was instrumental in bringing Filamu Dada to fruition. As the documentaries continue to resonate with audiences, they serve as a testimony to the power of storytelling in advancing gender equality.
