Strengthening women leaders in governance

Date:

In Kenya, the participation of women in political and decision-making processes has seen gradual progress, yet significant challenges remain. Despite constituting half of the population, as per the 2019 Kenya Population and Housing Census, women's representation in political and leadership roles is disproportionately low. Recognizing this, the "Expanding Spaces for Women's Political Participation in Kenya" project spearheaded by Uraia Trust with the support of UN Women and funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC), launched to enhance the capacities of women leaders in seven key counties: Kisii, Homabay, Embu, Samburu, Kericho, Wajir, and Kajiado. This initiative, aims to create a conducive environment for women to engage in politics and governance freely and effectively.

Addressing the Barriers

Historical and structural discriminatory practices, economic barriers, limited access to information, and a male-dominated political environment are among the factors that hinder women from achieving their full potential in governance. The project seeks to dismantle these barriers and foster a more inclusive political landscape.

In April 2024, Uraia Trust organized a meeting "Advancing Gender Equality and Inclusive Decision-Making in Kenya through Policy Advocacy and Civic Engagement" which brought together women leaders from the seven focus counties and featured several key sessions on media engagement, enhancing their public profiles, best practices in gender-responsive policies and the role of civic education in promoting women’s participation in political and governance processes. "UN Women in Kenya is committed to advancing gender equality and inclusive decision-making. The meeting exemplifies our collective efforts in empowering women leaders from seven focus counties. Through sessions on media engagement, public profile enhancement, and gender-responsive policies, alongside civic education, we are equipping women with the tools to actively participate in political and governance processes. This initiative underscores our commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable society where every voice matters." Said Hellen Muchunu, Gender and Governance Analyst at UN Women in Kenya.

Looking Ahead

The outcomes of these activities are becoming evident, with increased representation of women in political positions in the focus counties. "Through this project, we are empowered with ongoing support and training, equipping us with the knowledge to navigate the complexities of the political arena. It is about building on our successes and ensuring that women leaders like me can continue to make a meaningful impact." Echoed one of the beneficiaries.

Key Project Activities

The project aligns with the UN Women’s Strategic Note for Kenya 2023-2026, which envisions a peaceful, inclusive, democratic, equitable, and prosperous nation where women and girls can realize their rights and potential. To achieve this, the project focuses on several strategic activities: advocacy for women’s political rights, capacity building for effective lobbying and decision-making, peer learning and mentorship among other key areas.
