National Voluntary Review on SDGs 2024 indicates increased availability of Gender Data
Date:
Significant strides have been made in evidence-based monitoring and reporting of country priorities and commitments to gender equality and women empowerment (GEWE) and SDGs in Uganda. The country has tripled the number of gender specific SDG indicators with available data to 32 out of 54 as highlighted in the 3rd Voluntary National Review (VNR) Report 2024.
The VNR was signed and approved by the President of Uganda, H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni during the 3rd Annual SDG Conference held on 19th -20th June 2024. Uganda is among the countries presenting it’s VNR to the High-Level Political Forum in July 2024.
As highlighted in the report, the increased availability of gender data for decision-making since 2018 has stemmed from several key initiatives including:
1. Routine Administrative Data: Uganda expanded the National GBV Database and established a National Trafficking in Persons Database.
2. Inclusive Surveys: Gender Equality and Women Empowerment (GEWE) modules were incorporated into the Uganda Demographic and Health Survey (UDHS) 2022 and the 2024 Population and Housing Census.
3. Dedicated Gender Surveys: The Time Use Survey 2019, National Governance, Peace, and Security Survey (NGPSS), and Violence Against Women and Girls Survey 2021 provided critical insights.
UN Women in Uganda supported the VNR process financially and technically through participation in the VNR Advisory Committee and the VNR quality assurance small task team.
