Equipped to Lead: How Training Transformed a Women Council Leader in Masuliita
Date:

Rita, a Women Council Leader from Masuliita Sub-County, once found herself grappling with the challenges of leadership in isolation. With limited training, mentorship, and guidance, many women leaders in her region feel neglected and ill-equipped to address the complex issues that their communities face. The lack of capacity-building opportunities made it difficult for Rita to lead with confidence or make meaningful contributions. In July 2024, she participated in a transformative training organised by Paradigm for Social Justice and Development, with funding from the Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF) and technical support from UN Women. The training focused on conflict resolution, peacebuilding, conflict early warning and response, and civic participation. For Rita, it was more than just a series of sessions—it was a turning point. “I was armed with new skills in conflict mediation, public speaking, and leadership” Rita expresses
Rita experienced a significant boost in her confidence. She became more vocal and proactive, soon earning a place as a valued member of the Local Peace Committee in her sub-county. This impact quickly became visible as she led community outreach, engaging residents through awareness campaigns, community radio programs, and direct mediation.
One powerful example of Rita's newfound influence came when she helped a woman who had been evicted from her home by her husband. The woman had heard Rita speaking on conflict resolution over the radio and reached out for help. She approached the situation with the tact and skills she had developed during her training. Though the husband initially dismissed her efforts, Rita persisted. She returned with two members of the Local Peace Committee, clearly identified by their reflector jackets. This show of community-supported authority made a difference—the husband agreed to a discussion. Through patient listening and guided dialogue, Rita uncovered the root causes of the couple’s conflict and helped them reach a peaceful resolution. The woman returned home, and the couple began working towards reconciliation.

Today, Rita stands as a shining example of how empowering women leaders with the right skills and support can transform not just individuals, but entire communities. Her journey from a struggling leader to a trusted mediator highlights the impact of targeted capacity building. With her voice now amplified,
“I now promote peace and resolve conflicts, inspiring others in my sub-County” says Ritah.
