UN Women Nigeria Bi-annual Newsletter 2023 (Jan-June)

This biannual newsletter provides insights into efforts aimed at advancing gender equality and women's empowerment in Nigeria in 2023. Amidst the backdrop of the 2023 General Elections, collaborative endeavors with civil society organizations and women's groups intensified advocacy for inclusion and equal opportunities in the political sphere. Special emphasis was placed on enhancing media coverage of women candidates' election campaigns while also ensuring participation as candidates, voters, and officials. Beyond electoral endeavors, sustained support for gender-responsive initiatives remained a priority. Noteworthy initiatives included the convening of the High-level Donor Feedback Forum to assess UN Women's Strategic Note for Nigeria, aligned with national development priorities and frameworks. The launch of the Development Partners Group on Gender's strategic framework provided a roadmap for development partners to complement national gender initiatives. Also, activities during International Women's Month showcased the innovative use of technology by young Nigerians to promote gender equality and women's empowerment. Economic empowerment initiatives, particularly affirmative procurement, aimed at ensuring equal participation of women in contract bidding processes. The newsletter also features human-interest stories and emphasizes the importance collaborative efforts in promoting gender equality and women's empowerment in Nigeria.
