Grassroot activism and women leadership in peace building

UN Women and the Somali women leadership initiative organization organized trainings are enabling the women of both North Galkayo and South Galkayo districts emerge as champions of peace. Amidst fragile contexts and competition over vital resources such as water and grazing land, and the human suffering, they courageously stood up and initiated dialogue to resolve the conflict. Through their unwavering determination and collaborative efforts, they successfully mediated the dispute, fostering understanding and reconciliation between the two communities.
Under the Women Peace and protection joint program funded by the Peace Building Fund and the Somalia Joint Fund, at the local women leaders remarkable contributions not only brought an end to the conflict but also served as powerful evidence to the transformative power of grassroots activism and women's leadership in building peace and harmony within communities.
Mothers save one family campaign
In Beledweyne District, a remarkable initiative called the "Mothers Save One Family Campaign" driven by the women of the community, emerged, their mission is: to aid Somali families devastated by the El Niño floods, particularly focusing on vulnerable children and mothers facing dire circumstances without access to shelter or sustenance. With unwavering determination, these women rallied their fellow citizens and other stakeholders, urging widespread participation in their noble cause.
UN Women supported capacity development initiatives added to the ongoing efforts and in accelerating the grassroots campaigning and engagement with the community in garnering immense support and solidarity. The campaign resonated deeply with the people, igniting a sense of empathy and collective responsibility. Citizens from all walks of life, inspired by the women's passion and dedication, stepped forward to contribute thereby saving the dignity and lives of women and children in need of assistance.
The efforts and support by the mothers save one family campaign impacted immensely. As donations poured in, essential supplies such as food, shelter, and necessities reached those most in need. Families previously grappling with despair found hope and relief through the kindness and generosity of their own neighbors and friends.
Today, the legacy of the campaign endures, serving as a beacon of hope and resilience in Beledweyne District. The women who spearheaded this movement have left an indelible mark, reminding us of all the profound impact that ordinary people can have when they unite for the greater good.
The community elders and development partners commended the solidarity and collective support by the campaign. “The Mothers Save One Family Campaign” is a testimony to how the communities can join in assisting each other bringing solidarity, peace and development, which needs to be sustained and replicated, emphasized Dr Syed Sadiq, Head of UN Women Somalia Office.
