In August 2024, the United Nations (UN) in Tanzania presented the results of its second comprehensive assessment on gender equality and women’s empowerment, demonstrating significant strides made in mainstreaming gender within the UN system. Eighty per cent of indicators now meet or exceed performance standards.

Hanitra Njatonirina is a Gender Specialist working with UNDP Madagascar. Hanitra and 50 other colleagues drawn from UN agencies across East and Southern Africa took part in a UNCT-SWAP Scorecard and UNCT GEM training that was recently held in Maputo, Mozambique, organized by the UN Women Regional Office for East and Southern Africa. The training aimed at bolstering the UN’s efforts to mainstream gender and promote gender equality in our work in the region.

The 2023 edition of the UNCT-SWAP Gender Equality Scorecard and the UNCT Gender Equality Marker training, held in Maputo, Mozambique from 19th to 23rd June 2023 presented an opportunity to track and leverage the UN System’s performance on gender equality in the region.

A baseline survey conducted by UN Women Rwanda on unpaid care work status among women and men within 8 districts of Rwanda, revealed that a rural woman spent seven hours per day doing unpaid care work, while the urban woman spent six hours and nine minutes as opposed to the man who only spent two hours per day.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management (MHADM), UN Women and other Ministry partners conducted a one-day validation workshop for the gender analysis of the impact of conflict in South Sudan for an upcoming report. Nairobi, Kenya – 04 August 2020 – A recent study using a first-of-its-kind measure of women’s empowerment, the Kenya Women’s Empowerment Index (WEI), shows that only 29 percent of Kenyan women can participate equally and effectively in political, economic, and cultural life — and that their involvement is largely dependent on household circumstances.
