In August 2024, the United Nations (UN) in Tanzania presented the results of its second comprehensive assessment on gender equality and women’s empowerment, demonstrating significant strides made in mainstreaming gender within the UN system. Eighty per cent of indicators now meet or exceed performance standards.

Hanitra Njatonirina is a Gender Specialist working with UNDP Madagascar. Hanitra and 50 other colleagues drawn from UN agencies across East and Southern Africa took part in a UNCT-SWAP Scorecard and UNCT GEM training that was recently held in Maputo, Mozambique, organized by the UN Women Regional Office for East and Southern Africa. A baseline survey conducted by UN Women Rwanda on unpaid care work status among women and men within 8 districts of Rwanda, revealed that a rural woman spent seven hours per day doing unpaid care work, while the urban woman spent six hours and nine minutes as opposed to the man who only spent two hours per day.
