On 8th March 2024, the United Republic of Tanzania, under the leadership of the Minister for Community Development Gender Women and Special Groups in Tanzania Mainland, launched the new National Gender and Women Development Policy (2023). Providing the new national framework to implement international and regional gender equality and women empowerment commitments, the National Gender Policy is an example of Tanzania efforts to establish an enabling legislative, policy and normative environment for women’s rights in Tanzania.
In collaboration with the National Gender Machineries, UN Women supports the implementation of the Gender Policies in Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar and the operationalization of Gender Policy Guidelines for sectors and Local Government Authorities.
Co-chairing the Gender Mainstreaming Working Group Macro-Policy in Tanzania Mainland and the Gender Mainstreaming Technical Working Group (GMTWG) in Zanzibar, UN Women contributes to strengthening national gender coordination mechanisms to enhance policy dialogue, coordination, monitoring and reporting on normative frameworks at regional and global levels, including Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the Commission on the Status of Women, the Voluntary National Rreport on the Sustainable Development Goals, and the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325.
Coordinating the commerations of key gender and human rights international, regional and national Days, UN Women works very closely with Women Rights Organizations, Women’s Networks, including Women living with HIV/AIDS, and Women Living with Disabilities, to strengthen movement building and joint advocacy for transformative change across different thematic areas.
